18 January 1948: The first courses began at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s first University.

104 foundation students began their courses at the University on 18 January 1948 but formal opening of the University was on 25 March 1948.

The University of Ibadan was originally created as an extension of the University of London and was called University College, Ibadan.

University College, Ibadan became an independent university in 1962 when it severed its last links to the University of London and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, was named the university’s first chancellor the following year, 1963.
