SPORTS: 19 Year Old Breaks National 200m Sprint Record

Nigeria’s Favour Chukwuka Ofili has broken the country’s national record for the women’s 200 metre race, as she came first at the 2022 Tom Jones Memorial Classic in James G. Pressly Stadium, Gainesville, Florida, USA.

The previous National Record of 22.04 seconds was set in 2018 by Blessing Okagbare.

Ofili ran a blistering 21.96 secs to also become the first collegian athlete to ever go sub 22 secs. With the time, she also emerged as the first Nigerian female to break 22secs in the women’s 200m – and only the second woman in African history.

She has now set a new National Record and a new NCAA Record. Her time is also the fastest in the world this year, the fastest ever in the NCAA and a new School Record.

Favour Ofili is a Nigerian student at the Louisiana State University (LSU). She specialises in the 200 and 400-metre races. She won silver in the 400 metre race at the 2019 African Games and is also the 2019 African youth champion in the 200 / 400 metre races.
