General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has postponed the “Light Up Sokoto” Crusade which was earlier scheduled to hold physically in the state from May 16 to 17, 2022.
He announced this on 16 May 2022 via a social media post. Instead of the physical crusade, it was held virtually, and members of the church were enjoined to join via social media platforms to pray for Sokoto State, where a student was murdered on allegations of blasphemy.
On Thursday 12 May 2022, some Muslim youths had stoned and burnt a 200-level Home Economics student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel Yakubu, for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
The police later arrested two suspects but protesters gathered and demanded their release on Saturday 14 May 2022.
The demonstrators then turned violent and vandalized/ looted/ burnt traders’ shops, churches and residential apartments believed to be owned by Christians. However, the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has imposed a curfew on the state.
