During the evening of Monday 19Sept2022, MTN Nigeria commenced commercial 5G services in Lagos, with a promise for a national launch in Abuja soon.
MTN CEO Karl Toriola made the promise after demonstrating capabilities of the network to the public in Lagos on Monday, said his company has switched on the 5G network in 6 geo-political zones with about 223 sites which are being accelerated very fast.
MTN is targeting 7 Nigerian cities for a start: Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, Maiduguri, Kano and Owerri.
MTN and another telco MAFAB communications won the license to deploy 5G in Nigeria in December 2021 and were given 24August2022 deadline to deploy services.
MTN switched on test services on the deadline, and on 19Sept22 launched Commercial services in Lagos.
5G is the 5th generation of cellular network technology designed to offer faster speeds per user and can easily handle more connections.
Because of its increased capacity, it is up to 100 times faster than 4G, meaning faster connectivity. It has low latency and greater bandwidth.
