Benjamin, a boy from Makoko area of Lagos State in Nigeria, has been given a scholarship up to university level by a chess master from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA.

The scholarship was offered by the President of MIT Chess club, Tyrone Davis III. The news was broken by the Founder of Chess In Slums, Tunde Onakoya via a tweet on Saturday 09 April 2022.

Inspired by a US-based charity, The Gift of Chess, Tyrone Davis III visited Nigeria a fortnight ago to see how the Chess in Slums Africa project is being executed.

Onakoya tweeted: “Tyrone’s visit was inspired by the @thegiftofchess’ mission to connect the world by leveraging the power of chess to create community, expand opportunity and ultimately change lives”.
